On Monday evening March 9th, the Keystone Chapter of Fire Service Instructors presented an award honoring Deputy Chief Ron "Moose" Wentzel for his work as a fire instructor. Moose's family was present to accept the award from Keystone Eastern Region Director Steve Dragon.

Six members of the Reading Fire Department Hockey Team, along with members of the Harrisburg FD team traveled to Toronto Canada to attend the 40th annual Southern Ontario Firefighters Hockey Tournament.

Congratulations to Firefighter Keith "Sarge" Eschleman on more than 25 years of service to the city. Sarge began his career on June 26th, 1989. After completing fire training he was assigned as a jumper on the "C" platoon.

Reading Fire Department statistics from the year 2014. The department experienced an increase of more than 17% percent in total runs. With the addition of a 4th Medic unit in late 2013, EMS runs increased 13%.

Firefighters of the A platoon said good bye to Firefighter Charlie Secara this evening as he completed his final night shift. Secara took a position with the McMurdo Fire & EMS Department in Antarctica.

Congratulations to Firefighter Jeffrey Weitzel on his retirement after 20 years of service to the City of Reading. Jeff began his career on February 1st of 1995. After he completed the fire academy, Firefighter Weitzel was assigned as a jumper on the "A" platoon.

Due to the poor condition of some of the staff vehicles, the city has taken delivery of two 2015 Ford Explorers. The vehicles will be assigned to Car 3 (Serba) & Car 6 (Lessar).

Early in the morning of January 28th of 1985, the history of the Reading Fire Department was tragically altered when box 1726 was struck for a fire at the YMCA. First arriving units reported fire showing from the first and second floors along the Reed Street side of the building.

The Reading Firefighters held two charity birthday parties at the Southwest Fire Station this month. The parties were auctioned during the MDA Black & Blue Ball this past year. Lucky children are able to have their birthday held inside the firehouse complete with fire truck rides.
